A question I often get asked is:
"How Does Social Media Negatively Impact Teens"

In this blog post, I’ll spend time answering the question and offer evidence-based ideas on what you can do to combate the negative impacts.

But first- if you missed my first blog post in this series, check it out here.  It’s all about the positive impacts social media can have on teens and it’s definitely worth checking out.

So without further ado, let's starting answering the question, "How Does Social Media Negatively Impact Teens"

#1 Comparison and Low Self-Esteem

Social media often showcases idealized versions of reality. Teens are constantly exposed to curated images of perfection, which can lead to unhealthy comparisons and feelings of inadequacy.

This phenomenon, known as “social comparison,” can severely impact self-esteem and body image, contributing to disorders like anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

#2 Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a pervasive issue on social media platforms. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying can be relentless, with harmful messages and images spreading quickly and widely.

Victims of cyberbullying often experience heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and in severe cases, suicidal ideation.

#3 Addiction and Sleep Deprivation

  • Why it happens: Adolescents are naturally more prone to risk-taking due to developmental changes in their brain, particularly in areas related to impulse control and decision-making.
  • Signs: Experimentation with substances (alcohol, drugs), unsafe sexual practices, reckless driving, and thrill-seeking activities.
  • Impact: These behaviors can result in serious consequences, including legal issues, health risks, and accidents.

#4 Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

High Infidelity

Social media perpetuates the fear of missing out (FOMO).

FOMO is when teens feel anxious about not being included in social events or experiences.

This can lead to constant checking of social media feeds, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness and exclusion.

So now that we've answered the question

...it's time to look at what we can do about it

As a therapist, I play a crucial role in helping teens navigate the challenges posed by social media. Here are some strategies that can mitigate its negative impact:

#1: Education and Awareness

Educating teens and their parents about the potential risks of social media is vital.

Educating teens and their parents about the potential risks of social media is vital.

Open discussions can help raise awareness about issues like cyberbullying, social comparison, and the importance of digital well-being.

Providing teens with tools to critically evaluate the content they consume can empower them to make healthier choices online.

#2: Promoting Healthy Digital Habits

Encouraging teens to set boundaries around their social media use is essential.

This can include setting time limits, designating tech-free zones or times (such as during meals or before bedtime), and encouraging breaks from screens.

Teaching mindfulness and stress management techniques can also help teens maintain a balanced relationship with social media.

#3 Providing Support for Cyberbullying Victims

Creating a safe environment for teens to report cyberbullying is critical. Therapists offer counseling and support to victims, helping them develop coping strategies and resilience.

#4 Fostering Real-Life Connections

While social media can facilitate virtual connections, fostering real-life relationships is crucial for emotional well-being.

Encouraging teens to engage in offline activities, such as sports, hobbies, and face-to-face interactions with friends and family, can provide a more balanced and fulfilling social life.

#5 Encouraging Positive Content Creation

Guiding teens to use social media positively can shift their focus from passive consumption to active creation.

Encouraging them to share their talents, hobbies, and interests can foster a sense of purpose and achievement.

Promoting accounts and influencers who spread positivity and authentic content can also provide healthier role models.
