“We communicate terribly.”
This is one of the most common things couples tell us.
But communication problems usually aren’t just about learning to use nicer words.
You may already know you’re supposed to use “I statements.”
You may already know yelling isn’t particularly productive.
You may have read the books, listened to the podcasts, and promised each other that next time you’ll handle things differently.
And then next time arrives.
Good couples counseling goes deeper than communication tips.
We look at what happens inside each of you when conflict begins .
What are you afraid is happening?
What are you assuming about your partner?
What does their reaction mean to you?
What do you do when you feel hurt, rejected, controlled, criticized, ignored, overwhelmed, or unwanted?
Once we understand that, communication starts making a lot more sense.
