Sometimes weekly therapy is exactly what you need.
And sometimes you spend half the appointment getting settled, finally reach the thing you actually came to therapy for, and then—there it is—the clock.
A therapy intensive gives you something different: protected, concentrated time to focus on a specific problem without stopping just as the work gets going.
High Thrive Counseling offers personalized therapy intensives in Indianapolis for couples, trauma and EMDR, and relationship recovery after betrayal.
You don't have to figure out which format is right for you by yourself. We'll talk through what is happening, what you want to accomplish, and whether an intensive makes sense for your situation.
What Is a Therapy Intensive?
A therapy intensive is a longer, concentrated block of psychotherapy built around a specific treatment goal.
Instead of spreading the work across many shorter appointments, an intensive gives us more uninterrupted time to understand what's happening, work directly with the problem, practice new responses, and create a plan for what happens next.
An intensive isn't automatically better than weekly therapy.
It's simply a different treatment container.
For some people, weekly therapy is the right fit. For others, a concentrated block of time makes more sense because the issue is complex, urgent, difficult to contain in a traditional appointment, or simply easier to work on when you don't have to keep starting over.
THREE WAYS TO MAKE MORE ROOM
Therapy Intensives at High Thrive Counseling
We currently offer three specialized intensive options.
01 / RELATIONSHIPS
Couples Therapy Intensives
When your relationship needs more room than a weekly appointment can give it.
A couples intensive gives you and your partner uninterrupted time to slow down the patterns that keep repeating, understand what's happening underneath the conflict, and practice doing something different.
We may work on:
- Repeating conflict cycles
- Communication and emotional disconnection
- Trust injuries and resentment
- Infidelity and relationship betrayal
- Sex, intimacy, and desire differences
- Boundaries and agreements
- Parenting, finances, family stress, and major life transitions
- Premarital and relationship preparation
02 / TRAUMA + EMDR
EMDR Intensives
Focused time for trauma processing and specific treatment goals.
Sometimes you understand exactly what happened, but your nervous system hasn't caught up.
An EMDR intensive provides extended time for focused trauma treatment without repeatedly stopping and restarting every 55 minutes.
EMDR intensives may be appropriate for focused work involving:
- Distressing memories
- Trauma
- Anxiety and triggers
- Grief and loss
- Specific experiences that continue to affect your current life
- Stuck beliefs or emotional responses
EMDR intensives are available in three-hour or six-hour blocks, with the treatment plan determined during consultation and preparation.
03 / BETRAYAL + TRUST
Affair Recovery Intensives
When betrayal has changed the relationship and weekly therapy isn't giving you enough room.
Infidelity can create a relationship crisis that affects everything.
You may be dealing with repeated questions, intrusive thoughts, anger, shame, defensiveness, uncertainty, or the difficult question of whether trust can be rebuilt.
An Affair Recovery Intensive provides concentrated time to work on stabilization, accountability, disclosure-related decisions, triggers, rebuilding safety, and determining what needs to happen next.
This is different from a general couples intensive because betrayal often requires a more specific therapeutic structure.
Why Choose an Intensive?
You keep running out of therapy before you get to the important part.
An intensive may make sense when:
- You've been having the same argument for months—or years.
- Weekly therapy feels too fragmented.
- There are several interconnected issues that need attention.
- You need focused time to work through a specific relationship crisis.
- You want to address trauma without repeatedly stopping and restarting the process.
- You're traveling to Indianapolis and would rather concentrate appointments.
- You've already done therapy and know what the problem is—but you're still stuck.
- You want a structured period of focused work followed by a clear plan for what happens next.
An intensive can also make sense when your schedule simply doesn't work well with weekly therapy.
You don't have to manufacture a crisis to benefit from concentrated therapy.
FROM FIRST CONVERSATION TO NEXT STEPS
What Happens During an Intensive?
Your time is planned around your actual goals.
This isn't a generic workshop where everyone completes the same worksheet.
Before the intensive, we'll determine whether this format is clinically appropriate and identify what you want to accomplish.
Depending on the type of intensive, your work may include:
-
01
Consultation + Fit
We'll talk about what's happening, what you're hoping to change, and whether an intensive is the right format.
-
02
Preparation
You'll complete the appropriate paperwork, questionnaires, or assessment materials so we can use our time efficiently.
-
03
Focused Therapy
We'll spend extended time working directly with the concerns you've identified.
-
04
Practice + Integration
Rather than simply talking about what you should do differently, we'll practice new ways of responding when appropriate.
-
05
Next Steps
You'll leave with a clearer understanding of what you've worked on, what remains unfinished, and what the next step should be.
How Long Is an Intensive?
The length depends on the type of intensive and your treatment goals.
High Thrive currently offers intensive formats ranging from three-hour blocks to multiple full days.
For couples, options may include:
- Half-day intensive
- One-day intensive
- Two-day intensive
- Three-day intensive
EMDR intensives may be structured as three-hour or six-hour treatment blocks.
Your consultation is where we'll determine what format makes sense for your goals.
You don't need to choose the perfect number of hours before you talk with us.
Intensive Therapy vs. Weekly Therapy
Which is right for you?
| Weekly Therapy | Intensive Therapy |
|---|---|
| Shorter, recurring appointments | Longer, concentrated blocks |
| Work unfolds gradually | More uninterrupted time |
| Useful for ongoing therapy | Useful for focused treatment goals |
| Regular weekly rhythm | One or more concentrated days |
| Multiple starts and stops | Fewer transitions between sessions |
Neither format is automatically better.
The question is:
Which structure makes the most sense for the work you need to do?
THE HIGH THRIVE APPROACH
What Makes High Thrive's Intensives Different?
Focused doesn't mean rushed.
An intensive isn't about cramming as much therapy as possible into a day.
It's about having enough time to slow down.
To notice the pattern.
To understand what's underneath it.
To practice something different.
And to leave knowing what you're actually supposed to do next.
At High Thrive, therapy is active, collaborative, and personalized. We aren't interested in simply giving you insight and sending you home with a nice collection of things to think about.
We want the work to translate into your actual life.
Your marriage.
Your nervous system.
Your relationships.
Your ability to communicate.
Your ability to respond differently when the old pattern shows up.
REAL PEOPLE. SPECIALIZED SUPPORT.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an intensive better than weekly therapy?
Not necessarily. They're different formats. An intensive may be useful when you want concentrated time around a specific treatment goal, while weekly therapy may be better for ongoing support and gradual work.
Can I do an intensive if I already have a therapist?
Sometimes, yes.
An intensive can potentially complement your existing therapy rather than replace it. With your permission and appropriate coordination, therapists can sometimes collaborate around the work.
Can couples do an intensive if they've never been to couples therapy?
Yes. The consultation and preparation process helps determine whether an intensive is appropriate and what preparation is needed.
Can an intensive fix my relationship?
An intensive can provide focused therapeutic work, but no ethical therapist can promise that it will fix a relationship.
The work that happens after the intensive matters enormously. The goal is to help you understand what is happening, practice different responses, and leave with a clearer plan.
Are therapy intensives covered by insurance?
Intensive therapy is generally structured differently from standard weekly psychotherapy and may not be reimbursed in the same way. High Thrive Counseling is out of network.
Ask about current fees and documentation during your consultation and contact your insurance company if reimbursement is important to your decision.
What if I'm not sure which intensive I need?
That's exactly what the consultation is for.
You don't need to diagnose yourself from a website.
Tell us what's happening, and we'll help determine whether a couples intensive, EMDR intensive, affair recovery intensive, weekly therapy, or another service makes the most sense.
Sometimes 55 Minutes Just Isn't Enough.
You don't have to arrive with everything figured out.
You just need to know that something isn't working—and be willing to spend some focused time doing something about it.
